Although cot beds, a cot that can be converted in to a miniature bed once your baby has grown in to a toddler, have been around for some time they have now become very popular as parents recognise the benefit of using them to help facilitate a smoother transition from the familiar security of the enclosed cot environment to the exciting world of the big girl (big boy) bed.

If you did not buy cot beds for your childrens rooms, then stand alone toddler beds are available ranging from plain wooden frames to those decorated with TV or film characters to generic themed junior beds with fairies, pirates, cars or flowers on them.

Most toddler beds are build around cot bed sized mattresses, which are 70cm by 140cm, and require the appropriate mini bedding to fit. If space is at a premium then shop smart and find a bed which includes a little extra storage but do be aware that your naturally inquisitive toddler is likely to have a rake around in the drawers at some point when she is supposed to be sleeping so remember to be careful what you put in them to avoid injuries and accidents.

There is no exact science to how long the shelf life of the toddler bed will be as it depends on the height and weight of your child however you need to keep an eye that they do not become too cramped and can have a comfortable night's sleep. Once your child has out grown their junior bed the move to a standard single bed should hopefully go without a hitch.
